History

Environmental Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Civil and Planning Engineering, “Veteran” National Development University (UPN) of East Java, was founded in 1993 as a STATE DEPARTMENT under the management of the Defense and Security Department. Based on a joint decree by the Education and Culture Minister No: Kep / 0307 / X / 1994 and the Defense and Security Minister No: Kep / 10 / XI / 1994, the department was equalized and changed to a Study Program in 2009. The first set of students admitted into the department during the odd semester of 1993/1994 academic year, were a total of 26, and ever since then, the number has continuously increased as students tend to get more acquainted with the course. In addition, the department initially, had only one class, with a capacity of 40 students, however, the 2017/2018 Academic Year, saw an increase in each batch with an average of 366 students, with two or three parallel classes. A total of 18 students, were the first set of graduates from the department in 1997, while in March 2020 the number increased to 674. Currently, the percentage of graduates working in their fields of expertise is approximately 85%. This percentage is outstanding considering the large environmental engineering work area with many fields of expertise.

Furthermore, the department has a current number of 366 students and 14 lecturers in its 2019/2020 Academic Year.

Since the establishment of the Environmental Engineering Study Program, in 1993, it has been part of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Planning (FTSP), which comprises of two other departments, namely Architectural and Civil Engineering. In 2014, UPN Veteran of East Java changed its status to become a State University and based on the Regulation of the Research, Technology, and Higher Education Minister No. 38 of 2015, it becomes one of the 5 Study Programs, within the Faculty of Engineering. The five study programs are Chemical, Industrial, Food, Environmental, and Civil Engineering.
